The Intermunicipal Development Plan will provide the City of Medicine Hat, the Town of Redcliff and Cypress County with a comprehensive policy framework regarding land use and future development within the urban fringe. The plan will include communication protocols and procedures for resolving conflicts as well as administering the plan among the three municipalities.
A steering committee made up of political and administrative representatives from the City, Town and County have been working diligently over the past year, preparing a draft document.
More work is to be done, but it is important the public – the broader community within this plan area – be involved at this stage to provide the steering committee with some valuable input. As the plan is fine tuned over the coming months, there will be other opportunities for the public to review and respond to the proposed Intermunicipal Development Plan.
Why do we need an Intermunicipal Development Plan?
- Coordination among adjacent municipalities in dealing with development, servicing and transportation matters in the rural-urban fringe.
- Establish an intermunicipal transition area within which planning and development decisions are coordinated to ensure that land use compatibility and long term planning objectives are protected.
- Establish the intermunicipal planning process as the preferred means to address planning issues.
- Examine and evaluate the options that may exist for regional servicing opportunities.
